Yes, I have a million things I should be doing today. The house needs cleaning, homework needs doing, I've got some business events coming up that I need to plan, recordings and calls need to be made, children need to be entertained, the house needs cleaning (yes, I said that twice; it needs to be done)... oh yeah, and now I'm a Cubmaster! I need to make time to figure out what that even means... A couple years ago, I would be completely overwhelmed right now -- thinking about what all of these things entails and drowning in my own inability to even begin it... halway doing a million things at once so that none of them really shows any progress. "Where do I start? There's not enough time! How am I supposed to do all this?" Too flustered to pick a place to begin. And a couple of years ago, I wouldn't have even had all this... I'd have had twenty less things to do and I'd have been lucky to pick up a few toys and get the kids fed. None of these other things would have even been on my schedule back then... I didn't think I had enough time to even think about them! And honestly, I avoided thinking too much about where I was for fear of realizing the need to go somewhere. I didn't want something else on my list to get done! Who has time for that?
I had a moment this morning. A moment where I considered an old pattern of overwhelm. A moment where I thought, I'm never going to be able to do all this... but I turned it around. EVERYTHING doesn't need to be done right now. So I dismissed that thought... I dismissed it and I thought instead... "I wonder what I CAN get done today?"... "I wonder what I can do RIGHT NOW to move toward fulfilling my potential?" I find that when we hold the question, rather than allowing ourselves to get caught up in the intentions, reality can begin to take shape in completely unexpected and marvelous ways. Suddenly, the doors of possibility opened. I CAN do ANYTHING. And everything will get done in time. If there is one thing I've learned it's that time can be created for those things we deem important, and those things that we don't deem important will wait until there's time. As long as we are using each moment, they will all align. Goals are good to have and intentions are always respectable, but sometimes connecting to ourselves and all that IS in the moment will take us farther toward them than any list could have ever materialized. So what I decided to do this morning is stack painted rocks on a makeshift beach in the living room with my daughter giving myself the space to be present without a list on my mind. Not to ignore what needs to be done, but simply to prioritize my own values at this point in time and appreciate what IS happening right now. And when I allow the things that are not necessary to fall into that space of non-necessity, sometimes an opportunity I had yet to consider arises... like writing this blog.
I am fulfilling my potential today by being present in the moment and by embracing the NOW as a place to begin... even when it seems like I'm out of time to finish! I am enjoying the things that nourish my soul and sharing with you the opportunity to turn your moments of overwhelm around as well. Next time you are feeling overwhelmed by your "list", take a moment and turn that thought around. Turn "I don't have the money to do that!" into "I wonder what resources have I not yet considered?" Turn "I don't have the time to do that!" into "I wonder where I can find a few minutes today?" or "I wonder what can I do RIGHT NOW?" You might be surprised by the time we let pass without even realizing it... often lost in thought about where we are going to find the time! Turn "I don't know where to begin" into "I wonder where I'd like to start?" or "I wonder what feels most important to me right now?" And turn "There's no way I can do all this" into "I wonder what I can do in this moment to start fulfilling my potential?" Give yourself a moment to "wonder" and see where it takes you! Wonder is a simple and powerful tool to disperse overwhelm and negative thinking. Keep the possibilities open and trust what comes to you in the moment as you let that "list" fade away. It may be somewhere that wasn't even on your "list"! And that is perfectly okay!
The "list" will wait! The moment is NOW. Sieze it in whatever way allows you to live more fully. Yes, goals require that steps be taken, but we must allow ourselves to move through those steps in a way that aligns with our values and our purpose... in a way that allows us to be more fully who we are and more fully connected to all that IS. Keep your "list" at bay and choose one step to take at a time, allowing yourself the space to BE in each moment as it arises, knowing that time is a construct of the mind, and that each moment is borne ceaselessly into the next. The moment is yours for the taking. Spend a little less time freaking out about how many you have and how quickly they end, and a little more time embracing each one as it comes! Allow yourself to wonder a little... it's like looking at the stars... When we open ourselves to wonder, the possibilities are endless... and connecting to that limitless reality, well, it begins to take shape in marvelous ways when we allow it to appear in our lives.
