Today I want to talk about passion. And no, I don't mean intense emotion. I think there is a little confusion about living with "passion". We use the word kind of interchangeably rather than according to its literal definition. So when I say "passion" I mean a marked enthusiasm, a flowing joy that is unaffected by external circumstance, a deep awareness of Oneness and of the sensuous experience of life, and an openness to divine inspiration.
When I say live "passionately" I mean live deeply and fully... put your whole self into it! Take in each and every moment through as many senses as possible and then express the beauty you have taken in consciously in the world allowing Divine inspiration to flow through you in all that you do. As humans we are gifted with the ability to conceptualize the data taken in through the senses and then to express it in the world! We take in Divine inspiration, and then we create through it. It is our gift! Let's use it!
I don't know how many of you were raised Christian, but I was. And in Christianity another passion we talk about is the passion of Christ. When we say this we are generally referring to his suffering and death... but in my mind Christ's passion is much larger than that. In Catholicism we often focus on the sacrifice and we talk about how it inspires us to sacrifice in our own lives. I want to talk about the "passion" that Christ showed in the way that he lived his life. And you don't have to be Christian to talk about this. There's a lesson in the story, no matter what your beliefs.
Christ's example for me is in the way that he allowed that Divine inspiration to flow through him. He followed his calling and allowed that inspiration to flow through him in all that he did even when he had doubts or didn't fully understand what he was being called to do. Yes there was pain, and difficulty, and even doubt... but he was able to look beyond these to the greater love that he knew prevailed. I think 'sacrifice" is a misperception on our part. He was living his truth, and to me the bigger deprivation would clearly have been to ignore it.
Have you ever tried to live a lie? Have you ever heard the call and pushed it down because you just couldn't figure out how to answer it? Because it seemed too hard or too crazy to follow? Have you ever felt isolated because no one could possibly understand you, depressed or defeated because the life you were creating just wasn't fulfilling the needs of your soul? Tell me that is not the bigger sacrifice! You do not have to live like that! Embrace and live the beauty of your truth! This is the "truth" that shall "set you free"! The truthful expression of your own connection, of your own Divinity, of your own unique way of living and communicating that greater love in the world!
We are called to follow Christ's, and all the other prophets, example. To love passionately... put our whole selves into living our truth and allow that Divine energy to flow through us in all that we do, even when we doubt it. Nothing is a "sacrifice" through which we are answering that call. And no, the "call" does not have to be a specific course of action. You do not need a step by step plan to answer. You do not need a clear end goal. You just need an open heart and a willingness to grow.
I spent a lot of years trying to adapt my calling to fit the expectations of the world. Trying to adjust, trying to make sense, trying to fit it in. I gave up on that. A muffled call is not passionate. A muffled existence is suffocating. I spent many a night doubting that I had what it took to even try to answer. Let the doubt fall away. You are enough. "God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called." Each of us has a unique calling- a unique expression of Divine love to share with the world. You have everything within you to answer, you have all the inspiration you need to live a full and passionate life! Follow the light within!
Christ's example teaches me, that I do not need to know all the answers. I do not need to know exactly what will come. I simply need to open my heart in the moment and allow that Divine love to flow through me however it may come; trusting it, even if at times it does not seem like the easy or rational choice. It may at times be difficult to stand in your truth, to live through your connection. But it is always more difficult, to hide.
If you are not sure, set aside your doubts for a moment, put a hand to your heart, and ask "What next?" Then, do what you feel. Listen to your inner guidance. Follow your heart. Follow that Divine inspiration that is there flowing through you in every moment! Allow it to pour out into the world! Live your passion! It doesn't have to make sense. And it's okay if you doubt from time to time (we all do that). You just have to trust that it's the best step for you. The path will unfold as you go. The purpose will align itself. Be who you are and allow your part in the Divine mystery to be revealed.
We all have a part. Exactly as we are. No more judging it. No more doubting it. Next time you hear that call, take a deep breath, and answer.
Your experience will be transformed. If you think you need help with that, give me a call.
