I don't know if you have heard the adage, "Follow your bliss," or if any of you have really given much thought to it. But I found myself weighted down by it for a long time. It made me feel like there was one thing that I was "supposed" to do. And I had no idea what that was. I went on this journey of trying to find that "one thing" that really made me happy and I couldn't find it. I found that I could be happy doing a great number of things when I approached them from the right state of mind. There is this idea floating around out there that we are supposed to find the "thing" that makes us happy and do that thing... do it fully... give ourselves to it... and discover our bliss! Sounds good, yes, but then what is it? How do we know and where do we look? We all want to be happy. However, I find that idea disempowering. I believe that to discover our "bliss" we must only look within. When we dive within ourselves, break down the walls and limiting thoughts that are separating us, and find that space of love and connection, we can then bring it forth in all that we do.
Bliss is not a thing we find through something else. There is no external factor on which one's bliss should ever depend. If I say yes, this is what makes me happy and I give myself to this, then what happens when this is no longer available or when this changes or when this doesn't work out or when some aspect of this is not so enjoyable or maybe I just don't want to do this anymore? If there is one thing we know in life, things and situations and circumstances are ALWAYS changing. Passions are not static. They grow and they change.
To me, happiness is fleeting. It is an emotion. It is something that we feel in the moment. It comes, it passes, it comes again. Bliss to me, is more substantial.... more lasting. It is not an emotion that we feel based on what's happening right now, it is a state that we develop within. A state of peace and a state of joy that is always accessible, that is not dependent on any external factor. There is not one way to express or manifest your bliss. You can manifest your bliss through all that you do. You can bring your bliss into every little mundane moment.
Have you accessed that space yet? Are you still working on it? Where have you been looking? I am here to tell you that you do not have to follow the thing that you "think" brings you bliss, because that bliss comes from within you! Start looking within! If there is something you want to passionately pursue - GO for it! But don't attribute your joy to it! The joy comes from within you! It is a state that you find within your own being, a state that you can then live through. Regardless of what you are doing, you have the power to bring your bliss forth at any time! Yes, certain actions and certain surroundings may help us to get in touch with it, but the more we allow ourselves to feel that, the more we come to realize that those things are not necessary to access that state of mind.
So how do you access it? Honestly, that is up to YOU! I like to engage my senses... to allow myself the space to perceive my sensual experience. I also like to play! To approach things playfully, unattached to any outcome. I like to focus on the things I am grateful for, which I can find in any situation. I like to remember my peace, and recall that I have the power to reestablish it in any moment. I like to take a deep breath, breathe out any negativity and open to the moment. There are a multitude of ways that you can access your joy. Through memory, through imagination, through gratitude, through the senses, through just stepping back from whatever you are experiencing and acknowledging that you have the power to look at it in a different way!
Bliss is not something we "follow". It is something we cultivate. It is something we allow to flourish within ourselves by simply accepting that we deserve to experience it. You deserve BLISS! Make some space, OPEN, and allow that realization through!
Don't wait for something to bring you bliss; allow it to burst forth your open heart right here, right now.
